A Cyprus Tax Identification Code — the TIC, known internationally as your TIN — is the single number that unlocks almost everything else about living or doing business here: filing a return, running payroll, claiming non-dom status, getting a tax residency certificate and, in practice, opening a bank account. In 2026 both the process and the rules on who must register have changed.Assessment and Collection of Taxes Law N.4/1978, Arts. 5 and 5A
This guide answers the practical questions in order: what the TIC is, who now needs one, how to register on the new Tax For All portal, the exact documents to prepare, how long it takes, and why the number matters for residency, employment and banking. Companies are covered separately at the end.
What is a Cyprus Tax Identification Code (TIC)?
A TIC is your unique, permanent taxpayer number issued by the Cyprus Tax Department. It is the same thing as a TIN — "TIC" is the domestic term, "TIN" the international one — and in Greek it is the AFT (ΑΦΜ). It is typically eight digits followed by one capital letter, for example 12345678X.
The same numbering logic applies to individuals and to companies: each registered taxpayer, natural or legal, receives one code that stays with them for life. Because Cyprus reports it under the EU and OECD automatic exchange-of-information framework, your TIC is the reference financial institutions use to identify you for cross-border tax reporting.OECD Common Reporting Standard / Council Directive 2014/107/EU (DAC2)
A crucial distinction: the TIC is not a VAT number. VAT registration is a separate application producing a separate CY VAT identifier, triggered by turnover thresholds or the type of activity, and covered in our Cyprus VAT registration guide. Many new arrivals need the TIC alone; traders and most businesses eventually need both.
Who needs a Cyprus tax number in 2026?
From 2026 the registration net is materially wider than before. You must register for a TIC if you have income taxable under the Income Tax Law, if you are a Cyprus tax resident aged between 25 and 70 (regardless of income), or if you are a legal entity established in Cyprus.Income Tax Law N.118(I)/2002, Art. 5; Council of Ministers Decree
This is a genuine shift. Historically, individuals only had to register once their gross income crossed the filing threshold (19,500 euros for earlier years). The 2026 approach ties registration to tax residency itself, not just to taxable income, so a resident living on savings or exempt income can still be required to hold a TIC and file. The practical groups who need one include:
- Employees — every employee has needed a registered TIN since 2025 to be run through payroll, even below the tax-free band.
- Self-employed individuals and freelancers.
- Anyone claiming Cyprus tax residency under the 183-day or 60-day rule or applying for non-dom status.
- Landlords and those with Cyprus-source rental or business income.
- Directors, shareholders and beneficial owners who will draw income from a Cyprus company.
- Non-residents with a Cyprus tax obligation (for example, Cyprus-source income).
How do you register for a TIC on Tax For All?
Since 2025-2026, registration in the Tax Register is carried out only online through the Tax For All (TFA) taxpayer portal. You create a TFA account, log in via the CY Login national authentication service, submit the registration request with your supporting documents, and on approval your TIC is issued and linked to the account automatically.Cyprus Tax Department — Tax For All (TFA) portal
Tax For All is the Tax Department's unified digital system, rolled out to replace the fragmented older TAXISnet environment. The registration steps are:
- Go to the portal at taxforall.mof.gov.cy and create an account, entering your personal details, then confirm via the activation email.
- Authenticate through CY Login, the Government's single sign-on, which since 2025 is the gateway into TFA.Cyprus Tax Department — Tax For All access via CY Login
- Submit the "request for registration in the Tax Register," uploading the identity and status documents listed below.
- On approval, your TFA account is activated and connected to your Tax Identification Number, and you are notified by email.
TAXISnet has not vanished entirely — some return-filing functions historically ran through it — but the front door for obtainingthe number is now Tax For All. If you engage a licensed accountant or tax representative, they can complete registration on your behalf; because Zeno is not a law firm, it coordinates independent Cyprus Bar advocates and ICPAC-licensed accountants who handle this end to end.

What documents do you need to apply?
The documents depend on your status. In every case you prove who you are and that you are lawfully connected to Cyprus; the exact supporting certificate differs for Cypriots, EU citizens, non-EU nationals and non-residents.
| Applicant | Core status document |
|---|---|
| Cypriot citizen | Copy of the Cypriot ID card |
| EU citizen resident in Cyprus | Registration Certificate (MEU1, the "yellow slip") from the Civil Registry and Migration Department |
| Non-EU national resident in Cyprus | Residence permit / permanent residence certificate (the "pink slip") |
| Non-resident of Cyprus | Official certificate from the country of residence showing the foreign tax code |
Alongside the status document, expect to provide a passport or national identity card and, in most cases, evidence of a Cyprus address such as a rental agreement or utility bill.Cyprus Tax Department — Required documents for online registrationNote the sequencing that trips people up: the yellow slip or pink slip is itself an immigration step, so a new arrival often has to complete residence registration before the tax registration will succeed. If you are still assembling those, our company registration guide and residency articles map the order of play.
How long does it take and what does it cost?
Obtaining a TIC is free of charge, and a complete application is usually processed within a few working days — commonly one to seven — depending on the district office and whether documents are in order. There is no government fee for the number itself.
The real timeline driver is not the Tax Department but the prerequisites: if you are waiting on a yellow or pink slip, or on a foreign tax certificate, that upstream step sets the pace. Practically, arrivals who already hold valid residence documentation and a Cyprus address are the ones who see the number within days. Build in buffer if you need the TIC to hit a payroll start date or a bank onboarding appointment.
Why does the TIC matter for residency, employment and non-dom?
The TIC is the anchor for the whole personal-tax chain. Without it you cannot file a return, cannot be assessed as a Cyprus tax resident, cannot obtain a tax residency certificate, and cannot be enrolled in payroll withholding.
For relocation planning the sequence is: register for the TIC, establish tax residency under the 183-day or 60-day rule, then apply (separately) for non-dom status, which delivers the 0% Special Defence Contribution treatment on dividends, interest and rents for up to 17 years. The residency certificate that foreign payers and treaty claims rely on is issued against your registered TIC, so the number has to exist first. On the employment side, since 2025 every employee must hold a registered TIN to appear in the employer's withholding declarations and to complete the annual TD59A allowances claim — there is no longer a below-threshold exemption from registering.Cyprus Tax Department — PAYE annual return / employee TIN requirement
Do banks require your Cyprus tax number?
In practice, yes. Cyprus banks and EMIs collect your tax identification number as part of onboarding, because they must report account holders under the EU automatic exchange framework and the OECD Common Reporting Standard. Expect the TIC (and any foreign TINs) to be asked for.Council Directive 2014/107/EU (DAC2) on automatic exchange of financial account information
This is why the order of operations matters for anyone relocating: residence documentation, then TIC, then bank account. A bank will not typically block you solely for lacking a Cyprus TIC if you are newly arrived, but self-certification forms ask for a tax residence and its associated TIN, and gaps slow onboarding. Getting the number early removes one of the most common friction points in a Cyprus move.
How does a Cyprus company get its own TIC?
A company registers separately from its people. After incorporation at the Registrar of Companies, the company should register with the Tax Department for its own TIC — generally within 60 days of incorporation — through the Tax For All portal.Assessment and Collection of Taxes Law N.4/1978 (registration obligation)
The company's TIC is distinct from the personal TICs of its directors and shareholders, and it is what the corporate tax return (TD4) is filed against — now at the reformed 15% corporate income tax rate from 1 January 2026. If the business will trade above the VAT threshold or carry out taxable supplies, VAT registration is a further, separate step. The full incorporation-to-compliance path, including tax registration, is set out in our guide to registering a company in Cyprus.
What are the deadlines and common mistakes?
Register on time, register through the right channel, and do not confuse the TIC with a VAT number. The registration obligation carries statutory deadlines — notably 60 days from incorporation for companies — and late or missed registration can attract penalties under the Assessment and Collection of Taxes Law.
- Leaving it too late. Employees needing payroll and companies needing to file cannot wait; register as soon as the qualifying event (employment, residency, incorporation) occurs.
- Skipping the prerequisite. Applying for the TIC before the yellow or pink slip is issued usually stalls the request.
- Assuming income below the threshold means no registration. From 2026, residency alone (ages 25 to 70) can trigger the obligation, and employees register regardless of salary level.
- Confusing TIC with VAT. They are different numbers with different triggers; needing one does not mean you have the other.
- Ignoring foreign TINs. Non-residents and dual-resident individuals must still supply their home-country tax code on the application and to banks.
